If you’re buying your first bugle, the good news is you don’t need to overthink it. A standard Rexcraft-style G/F regulation bugle will get you through every requirement of the Bugling Merit Badge and most ceremonial work besides.
A few things worth checking before you buy:
- Slide action — the slide should move smoothly without sticking
- Dent-free bell — small dents are cosmetic, but a badly dented bell can affect tone
- Mouthpiece fit — make sure the mouthpiece seats properly in the receiver
Beyond that, the biggest factor in how good a bugle sounds is the player, not the horn. Put your time into practice, and any solid regulation bugle will serve you well.
